Savoury Cheese and Ham Waffles

These delicious savoury cheese and ham waffles are a tasty weekend brunch treat, especially when served with a fried egg.

This is basically a brunch version of the classic cheese and ham sandwich, and in my opinion, so much better than that!

These savoury cheese and ham waffles are a filling and hearty way to start the day, and a perfect recipe for lazy weekends at home.

Is waffle and pancake batter the same?

Both waffle and pancake batter contain eggs, flour and milk. The difference, is that waffle batter contains a higher proportion of fat (in this case melted butter), to ensure you get that golden crisp exterior.

This savoury waffle batter also contains a small amount of sugar, to help get that lovely golden colour on your waffles.

Can you put cheese in a waffle maker?

Absolutely you can. To ensure the cheese doesn't burn, ladle a quarter of a cup of waffle batter into your waffle maker, then place the cheese slice (and ham if you're using) on top, before ladling on another quarter of a cup of waffle batter. Shut the lid and away you go.

Top tips for making savoury cheese and ham waffles

You can really play around with the flavours in these savoury waffles. Instead of ham, you could use cooked bacon or even sliced roast chicken.

Vary the cheeses too. Goats cheese would be great, as would blue cheese, for a more grown up tasting waffle.

I usually serve these savoury waffles with fried eggs, for a delicious brunch. You could also serve the savoury cheese and ham waffles for lunch, with a side salad and coleslaw.

Pin the savoury waffles for later!
